Turn on the red light
“Turn that down!”; a phrase I often heard growing up, and one that has often passed my own lips as I implore my child on an almost daily basis to lower the thuds and thumps which emanate from his bedroom and shake the four walls of our house with seemingly enough force to move the tectonic plates, with little to no success. I imagine my own parents felt the same way and reached a similar conclusion that I did when they bought me my very first Sony Walkman for Christmas the year they came out, and when I rushed out to the Apple Store to buy my son his first iPod nano; I don’t have to listen to this anymore. Headphones, self contained environment, problem solved, right? Wrong. Music it seems, wants to be heard, and it wants to be heard loud.
I don’t necessarily have a problem with that. We’re all music lovers in our family, and we’ve all got an assortment of gadgets to play our favorite music, and of course, my husband as deaf as he is from years of self abuse touring and hanging out with musicians is the worst offender of all, with his ‘pumpinest stereo’ as he likes to call it, which actually might shake the tectonic plates if played long enough, and then there’s me with the car stereo and my music mixes played at obscene volumes; where am I going with this? Oh yes… we’re going to see The Police tonight in Boston at Fenway Park – a show which promises to evoke many memories and is likely to have us dancing along the third baseline.
When we found out that The Police were touring in the states this summer, we knew that we absolutely had to get tickets to see them, and we’ve been completely giddy just thinking about it because after all, we grew up with The Police. Music is such an important part of each of our lives. You may not remember everything you did when you were 13 years old, but you’ll always remember the song that was playing when the boy who took you to the junior high school dance gave you your first kiss (Keep on Lovin’ You – REO Speedwagon). I know… I just dated myself horribly! But then once you got to high school and gravitated towards the cool kids, you were exposed to music you’d never heard before. Bands like U2, The Clash, The B-52’s and The Police, and all of that music stayed with you. You listened to it when you went to parties, when you got your drivers license and drove around in mom’s car with your girlfriends, or when you went out on dates, and when you went away to college. The music was part of your life, and it still is. I’ve got every album released by The Police loaded onto my iPod along with everything else I like to listen to, and as our music collection has grown, so has our gadget collection. My son now has his nano and a 30gb video iPod. I have a nano and an 80gb video iPod, and my husband has a 30gb and an 80gb iPod, and they’re all loaded with music, memories, and the pulse of our lives, but there’s nothing quite like going to a concert to hear one of your favorite bands of all time. That’s a memory which will always stay with you.
Speaking of iPods, my son’s laptop recently suffered a meltdown and of course the big panic was losing all of his music. One of the biggest complaints about the iPod was that your music only goes in one direction, and while you can move music from your computer to your iPod, it isn’t so easy to move it back from your iPod. So there has to be a geek worthy solution right? There is. I found the coolest piece of software from the littleapp factory called iPod Rip which allows you to pull your music off your iPod and load it back onto your computer, which in my son’s case (and I imagine a few other music lovers out there) is a life saver. This is a little piece of software which everyone who uses an iPod on any regular basis should have because you never know when your computer might decide to up and die on you.
What else is new in my world?
Shopping of course! I bought myself some La Perla undergarmets which with any luck my hottie UPS man will be bringing sometime next week, and I’ve been chipping away at my summer reading list too. Piper had an interesting post about how much of a bookworm she is (so am I) and she mentioned that some of her friends found it weird that she reads the same books over and over. Not at all! In fact, guilty as charged! I’m currently re-reading Delta of Venus by Anaïs Nin, which is one of my absolute favorite books of all time. I also bought the DVD Delta of Venus which is an adaptation from the book after I saw it on The Sundance Channel last year. If you’ve never read Nin, or specifically Delta of Venus, then do so, and the film is well worth checking out too if you can catch it on Sundance, or just get the DVD and watch the NC-17 version… the sex scenes are scorching!
I had a conversation with a friend the other day and kind of mused about how weird June and July have been. At first it felt like things were just hectic, now I think it’s just been a really long funk. I haven’t really felt centered, and for a while it felt like all I was doing was working and sleeping. My personal to-do list has filled up and hopefully I can break out of this funk and get myself back on track. One of the things I absolutely must do is go thru my links page and I’ve been toying around with the idea of changing the look of geishaland, but I kind of like the way my site looks. I’m attached to the subtle lines and easy flow of things here, but maybe this is yet another symptom of funkiness, or maybe it’s just the heat of summer getting to me. Who knows for sure?
My list of projects is getting out of control tho. I’ve been playing with my lelo nea for two months now and still have to write the review, I have the next part of this story to write, and then a bunch of other unfinished things to work on. Maybe I should quit working and become a professional blogger like my friend Jonathan? I mean, most of the time I work from my home office anyway, so it isn’t like that would change, and I could focus all of my attention on the comings and goings of cyberia and just write away!
Hmmmm….something to think about! But tonight… I’m turning on the red light!
Enjoy your weekend!
