Rebuilding and Adapting
Two days after my massive upgrade I’m still in the process of digging out of the weeds here, and I spent a good portion of yesterday working with Christopher Frazier of Glued Ideas to track down some bugs and display issues I was having with my theme. It’s important to understand that in the world of Wordpress, your theme is much more than just the graphic ‘look’ of your site – the theme controls every aspect of how you interface with the site, so some of these bugs and issues are extremely important to how things function here. I have to say that Chris is fabulous to work with and now I can take advantage of some of the changes made to the core Wordpress software.
The biggest change I’m dealing with is the distinction between Categories and Tags. In the past I had used categories to manage content, but I’m finding that tags and tagging make more sense, and if you notice in the right side Information Box on each individual post page, it now displays both Category and Tag information, and the bugs in the From this author and Author Feed code have been fixed.
Unfortunately, I now have to go thru every single post on my site and reassign it to a category and then re-tag everything. Last night I got to June of 2007 and finally went blind on it and went to bed, but I will get this done.
The Sanctuary section is still broken. The posts are all there, but finding them could be difficult until I get them assigned to a group category, so please bear with me. I’ve got a number of unanswered emails sitting in my inbox requesting the password, and once the section is built, I’ll get those out.
What else? I have to say that I was wrong about the direction Wordpress has taken. I hated the changes made to the software starting with the 2.1 series, and the 2.2 series was abysmal, but I’m finding 2.3 makes a lot more sense. I hope that the developers will stay in this direction, and the previews I’ve seen of the 2.5 series look promising, especially on the administrator console side.
I’ve also got to deal with the Links page, Blogroll, widget content and maybe then I can get back to writing! And looking a bit longer range – I’ll likely be investing in a complete graphic makeover of lazy geisha built around Chris Frazier’s theme, which I think is the next logical step for me to take.
I do enjoy this aspect of running geishaland, but it’s hard to focus on writing if I’m doing this, so I’d ask that you please bear with me as I work to make your experience here better! How’s that for a sales pitch?
