More Upgrades: Playing with Wordpress

Wordpress 2.5 has just been released today here.

The new admin interface is slick, but a it takes a little getting used to. After some minor issues with API keys, everything seems to be working… sort of. ugh. There seems to be some issues with the visual mode in the TinyMCE editor, tho the way the media libraries are organized is fabulous! Good job guys!

I have been working on a new blog using WordPress and I really like it. Just as I got the site done, they come out with a new version. I’ve downloaded it but not installed it yet. I’ll e-mail you with the new blog - it is about a new chapter in my life that you might be interested in keeping up with. I’ll e-mail you the details.

Did you have any plugins that aren’t working with the new version?

Hi Caitlain!

Oh no kidding! I’d just finished upgrading everything to 2.3.3 standards too like last month. I got a rewrite on the code for the template, upgraded the core wordpress software, and upgraded all my plugins to comply with 2.3+ — and now they release 2.5! But the 2.5 install was a breeze.

But from what I can tell, 2.5 is mostly a rewrite on the backend side of wordpress and deals more with the admin side of things rather than the core wordpress functions, tho the upgrade script did modify some database functions, but nothing noticeable. You’re going to have to get used to the admin interface which is completely different. A lot of commands and functions have been moved, and are now more menu based, and how you interface with writing posts, editing comments, etc., is quite a bit different. And they’ve integrated a lot of things with the core software which you used to have to use plugins for — but not in a bad way, it just takes some getting used to, especially after using one wordpress interface for the last two years! ;)

All my plugins worked without any problems. I added a couple of new ones which is what caused my API key issues, but I got those sorted out. I believe everything in 2.5 is backwards compatible with 2.3, and the issue I was having with TinyMCE wound up being a browser issue, so the software seems solid.

Yes, definitely email me about the new blog! I’d love to check it out!

Thanks!

I can’t get over how frequent the updates are. It feels like yesterday that I updated the other blog.I have a devil of a time understanding the code used on wordpress.

Hi Ana,

Yeah, I agree. For a while there they were pushing out releases way too fast to keep up with. I skipped the entire 2.2+ series, basically because I didn’t feel as tho it was very stable and didn’t offer many advantages. So, I went from 2.1.1 to 2.3.3 in one step, and now to 2.5 which is really an amazing release.

The entire UI has been redesigned and the Add Media and Gallery functions are amazing.

Out of all the platforms I checked out before deciding on WP two years ago, I still think WP is the best. I understand the direction they’ve taken the software, and it incorporates a lot of the best of Web 2.0 features with the needs of individual bloggers.

Okay, thanks for the info. I’m not too heavily invested in it yet, so I guess I’ll go ahead and give it a shot.

I’ll send you the e-mail in the next day or two. Before you read the e-mail, you might want to sit down. ;-)

Hi Caitlain!

Oh sure sweetie, no problem! Let me know if you ever need any help with your WP install. After two years it’s safe to say that I’ve made just about every common mistake that you can think of.

Sitting down? Oh dear! Well, you know I’m always here for you Caitiebelle.

Mwah!
