Geisha Boys

Sent to me by my longtime reader Dins_P.; a story which appeared on CNN here about the latest fashion accessory Japanese women cannot live without; a paid boy toy. It’s being termed as - ‘a dizzying role reversal’ - but I’m not so sure. I’m a modern woman, I saw American Gigolo, I saw Under The Cherry Moon, I know that wealthy women pay for the company of hot young men who are willing and eager to please – and while I cannot claim to ever having received such professional services pampering myself  – the geisha_boy (named Yunosuke) pictured with that CNN article isn’t going to cut it. You see, women tend to get a little insecure when their men look as pretty as (or prettier than) they are. A good rule of thumb girls – never go dancing with a man who uses more ‘product’ than you do.

But — Yunosuke claims to have made over 200k last year, so there might be something to this. Time for a trip to Tokyo I think! Banzai!

And — since I’ve become quite the content slut princess these days – if there’s something you think might interest me — by all means please send it along!

He is way too feminine for me. Maybe boys like that also work to satisfy the girl-girl part of the fantasy on some level without disturbing any social status quo? I don’t know, but I have never seen a male look so feminine.

There was an article I read here in the papers a few months ago that was discussing how women (I don’t remember if it related to China or Japan) preferred western men as marriage partners. I think the article appeared in relation to Australian men, in the Sydney Morning Herald. I have to look it up

Hi Ana!

Hmmm, not sure if that’s it - but you know, after I posted this (it was sent to me by dinsdale_piranha - he’s a good guy here) - but I thought about it some more, and in reality, for Japan it isn’t all that strange. I mean, the original geisha working in teahouses were men. They were considered artists. And also, the Japanese are responsible for vijuaru kei which is somewhat analogous to British and American Glam-Rock styles. And Kabuki often has such gender-warped archetypes in performance art.

So… lmao! All that history lesson aside — it’s still weird.

When I first checked out the article, I had to look at the picture like… a few times before I realized that it was a guy! He’s sooooo pretty! I mean, you know, “some” women like pretty-boys… I happen to like my men to look like men, but hey, it’s Japan!

It’s funny because people send me things to check out all the time, and as I’ve been going thru my inbox, I’ve decided to post a few of them here and there.

On Edit: Plus - it kind of fits in with ‘thinking smaller‘ and also, because I’ve been so productive lately, the pace of things here has really picked up too. Tho I think everybody is trying to keep up with me!

once again our wonderful media
provides no real cultural context
in order to sensationalize a story -
and deride women in the process.

for example, does anyone know
what greens fees are these days
for 18 holes on japan’s golf courses?
or what a typical caddie earns in a year?
just wondering.

my bet is these women are getting
a pretty good deal - and for
a whole lot less walking, to boot!

larokkaku,

Oh please! Don’t get me started on the media. It reaches back into my own past and my current present with my husband, so I’ll simply say - yes, without a doubt. It’s very much the ‘typical’ sort of way that everything has to have a salacious angle attached to it, or it doesn’t get written, go on television, or get assimilated into the collective consciousness.

Tho I cannot rationalize spending 50k for a night with one of these boy toys! But what is interesting, and which really deserves much more analysis is how far women have advanced in Japan in terms of earning power, social status, and the canonical hierarchy of business there — and yet, the article is written as if a bunch of spoiled female executives are hiring these boys as if they were buying a new Prada bag. And you know, maybe they are? Who’s to say? Successful men in Japan pay geisha incredible sums of money in teahouses - tho Japan is very much a patriarchal society, and I’m wondering just how much of this is women there rebelling against that.

I mean, there’s been a very strong undercurrent amongst Japan’s women to avoid things like marriage, childbirth, and all things ‘traditional’ to Japanese culture - for a while now. Perhaps this is the best example of how much that problem has become exacerbated. In fact, it’s been predicted that Japan will have a population problem in a few years simply because many women are electing not to have children.

saratoga,

  - lmao!

You’re so twisted… but that’s why I love you! haha!

Tho I’m taking the fifth on that one!

Yes, content slut/princess… has a nice ring to it, don’t you think, Oprah?

nina

Is it sad, interesting, cool, or what that, when I read that story this morning, the first person I thought of was you? lol

I believe my internal comment was “turnabout is fair play.” Men have been paying for escorts/geisha for eons, so this doesn’t surprise me at all.

And I do vehemently agree with you about his looks vs. those of the women he might be with. I don’t think I’d want a guy who was prettier than I was. lol

He looks like a gurrrrlllll!

But, I will take Kristen Scott-Thomas (from Under the Cherry Moon). She’s hot (even today). Ironically, she’s in “The Walker”, older women, younger men escorts.

Caitlain,

lmao! Oh you did huh?

Oh sure - why shouldn’t we have the same opportunity to be serviced by gorgeous men catering to our every conceivable whim? I mean, I can see myself being pampered by a few boys from Chippendales for say oh, a few hours or so! Mmmm… Beefcake! Yum! (Tho why is it that the really hot guys are always gay?)

I know! I wouldn’t want to be out with a guy who was prettier than me! I mean, all the other guys would be checking out him instead of me! That would just weird me right out! haha!

nina

Lazy Ichi,

lmao! Finding yourself strangely attracted here? Compelled to look?

Hmmm, I found some pictures of Kristen Scott Thomas for you to look at here. I haven’t seen “The Walker” - but I can’t believe I admitted to actually seeing “Under The Cherry Moon“!

I love Prince, but wow, what an awful, awful film that was.
