All I need is a lime-green jumpsuit…

A question posed to me by a reader; “Just how much of a geek are you? Would you ever do this to your own house?”

Well! What a can of worms to be opening bright and early on a Saturday morning, but I am completely tickled that he used my new Contact Form that I wrote about here - I just can’t get enough of that thing!

My unnamed reader has sent me a link to someone’s website who seems to be obsessed with the 1970’s British science fiction television show Space:1999 — which includes plans to create your own Moonbase Alpha interior design including resources to find appropriate furniture – and while I’m certainly aware of the series – because my husband bought the entire DVD collection and we’ve he’s watched it a few times – I’m not quite that much of a geek… tho my husband and I did go to a Halloween costume party dressed as Logan and Jessica from Logan’s Run once… and I did look incredibly hot wearing that lime-green mini-dress I made!

Does that still count?

But it seems that I’m not alone with my geek-girl credentials quandary. In a recent post here on the 13 Directions’s Weblog, the author writes this:

I am totally comfortable being a geek - reading sci fi, listening to obscure bands, knowing what my function keys do, wearing my Chucks even though I’m too old. It’s okay with me; these lifestyle choices are consistent with my sense of self.

I can identify with this statement – and it gets to the heart of the real dilemma for the self respecting geek girl… as well as the amazing allure the label often implies. Geek Girls are hot. We are. It’s just that simple – and I relish any opportunity to show off my knowledge of obscure science fiction films, computers and technology, and Japanese heavy metal bands – as well as – being completely comfortable wearing the silk garter belt and stockings I bought in Paris with my stilettos and my little black dress adorned with a simple string of Tahitian pearls around my neck. It’s the best of both worlds. And we want the men we interact with to recognize and respect that. We are not just some dumb thing for you to oogle! Well… some of us are, but that’s not the point!

Tell me my code is pretty and you’ve won my heart.

Tho my husband and I do diverge somewhat in our tastes. He loves Star Trek, I think it’s stupid… tho we both hate Star Wars and Tim Burton movies so I suppose that must mean something. He calls me his TrixieSpeed Racer’s girlfriend who was always there to get Speed out of a jam when something went wrong with the Mach 5.

And we were the hit of the party dressed as Logan 5 and Jessica 6!

Tho I think what best sums up my own geekiness and how that works in my marriage is this scene (below) from the film Free Enterprise. Watch it and I think you’ll understand – and I think I’m going to look for that lime-green mini-dress now…

And it’s Saturday…. and that means shopping and errands and probably working in the yard now that my crankiness here has subsided, and I hope I answered your question dear unnamed reader!

Enjoy your weekend!

don’t forget the matching shades!

I can’t remember the last good SciFi movie I saw, although I do like this one, Waking the Dead, even if it’s not scifi.

Ok. Your code’s pretty. You code like a girl”, so now you can make your own website button which indeed does say “Code Like a Girl”.

larokkaku,

 Got that part covered!

Lazy Ichi,

Oh that’s priceless! I love it! What a great blog… I think I’ve seen that before too now that I think about it! And yeah - I am going to make a “Code Like a Girl” button for geishaland! now!

I’m trying to remember what the last SciFi movie I saw that I actually liked. We were watching Independence Day for a while when it was being played 4 times a day on HBO… and then I went thru that with Armageddon for a while too. Will Smith is HOT! And Bruce Willis does something for me every once in a while too! ;)

But - I think the truly best SciFi films were done in the 70’s. You just can’t get better than Planet of the Apes or The Omega Man or Logan’s Run or The Andromeda Strain… there’s just so many. I did like Total Recall tho and bought that for my iPod. I’ll have to think about this one now…

Plus — even objectively — the set designs and model work on Space:1999 were brilliant for the time. Imagine what they could have done if they had had access to CGI?

And a big part of the reason we hate Tim Burton is for what he did to Planet of the Apes, and Batman of course! Prissy artsy asshole that he is..

George Lucas and Star Wars single handedly killed a great genre of film-making… that ass.

Ooh. I have two words for you:

Blade

Runner.

That is all.

Darling,
I thought you might want to delight in the inner geek in you:

“…And it’s Saturday…. and that means shopping and errands and probably working in the yard now…”

And I guess that means the Geishaland yard sale will be prepping soon. Hmmm…what’s in the geishaland yard sale?

Of course, in Egypt, Texas (hint hint), it’s already bbq season.

I guess it’d be too much to hope for that you’d have a photo of you in that lime green mini dress? I’d pay good money to see that. :p

Always humorous, informative, and self reflective, your most recent “All I need is a lime green jumpsuit…” had me in stitches as I imagined you in your mini-dress at some sci-fi geek function looking beautiful….it reflected back at me so to speak.

I’ve commented on your post in mine…

;-)
*hugs*

hapes,

Oh sure — without a doubt Blade Runner is an amazing film with enormous cultural influence. I saw Blade Runner when it was released, and the biggest issue I have with the film has been all the recuts and re-releases. We own it on DVD and I’m not even sure which version we have! I mean — it’s Film Noir meets dystopian future.

The version I remember seeing had the narrator voice over, but then on subsequent DVD releases that was removed - so there’s always been a degree of ambiguity about the film now when I watch it. Was Deckard a replicant? ;)

Still - that’s one of my favorites too. The visuals, theme, cast, and look and feel of the film are brilliant.

A similar bout of cuts and recuts happened with Brazil - the Terry Gilliam film? Another look at dystopian future gone awry - but in some versions all the dream sequences have been edited out.

And finally - another film which has suffered under the editor’s knife — Dune. Which is also one of my favorites too - the extended version is much, much better with lots of background that helps frame the film. The SciFi channel did a “re-imagining” of Dune few years ago, and also spun off a short mini-series - also not bad.

SciFi channel also did that re-imagining of Battlestar Gallactica — which is really, really good - but I just never had the time to watch it or follow it. The best new SciFi television series I’ve seen is The Sara Connor Chronicles. I’ve been buying episodes from iTunes and it’s really well done.

jade,

Oh you are sweet — yes, I’ve been aware of Think Geek for a while. If you look on the home page here and scroll down to where I have all my cute buttons, there’s a Think Geek button displayed there!

Thanks!

Lazy Ichi,

You know - I would love to have a yard sale! If I could get that packrat of a husband of mine to part with some of his junk, err, I mean stuff! lmao!

Okay — you lost me on the Egypt, Texas - bbq reference. It’s passover, right? err..

No - the yardwork is of course getting things ready to plant and winter cleanup. I raked leaves yesterday and bagged them all up in one of those big “ecologically sustainable” bags you get at Home Depot to put out curbside like the good:

yuppie wife/soccer mom/suburban goddess that I am!

nina

Caitlain,

lmao! You’d better save your pennies babe!

I’ll see if I can find one… it was long before the days of digital cameras - so if one does still exist it’s stuffed in a shoebox somewhere!

nina

jade,

Oh thanks! I’ll have to come see your post! Thank you!

Well - we don’t get dressed up and go to SciFi conventions… we’re not that consumed! This was a Halloween costume party and since that particular film (Logan’s Run) always had a special significance for me and my husband, we decided to go in character! Tho I did look good in the dress! I made it myself too - I found a bolt of the perfect fabric and just threw it together — not too hard considering how skimpy it was! I used to be able to sew pretty good too… tho his costume was quite a bit harder if I remember correctly, but I did okay with it. People were able to figure out what we were supposed to look like!

;)

As the resident BladeRunner expert in my local group of friends, allow me to enlighten you:

1> Deckard is a replicant. Ridley Scott (director) and Philip K. Dick (writer of the story on which the movie was ‘based) both agree, as do many elements of the films.

2> The voice overs are the ‘theatrical release’, which is what you saw way back when. I’m not fond of them, I prefer the ambiguity of the non-voice-over versions, because the movie is all about shades of grey.

As far as Brazil and Dune, I am not sure I’ve seen the recut versions of those. Having read the books for Dune prior to seeing the movie, I am shocked at how much David Lynch reimagined it. But on its own right, it’s very good. I don’t like Sean Young (in either Blade Runner as Rachel or Dune as Chani), so that puts a damper on it for me. Brazil is just brilliant in its own right, but is waaaaayyy dense.

The SciFi reimagining of Dune didn’t draw me in at all. And BSG, I have a few DVDs of the new one, but not all, and I’m not keeping up with the new season that just started. I’ll just keep the DVDs on my amazon wishlist until I have ‘em all and then watch the series start to finish.

hapes,

Oh! So you’re the resident expert! Well thanks! I appreciate your input then!

See - I’ve always gone back and forth about my perceptions about whether or not Deckard was a replicant. And I think all the different releases and cuts and recuts have contributed to that. I do enjoy Philip K. Dick’s work — and I did like A Scanner Darkly

I agree with you about Sean Young too. She was the weakest point I think in Blade Runner tho not so bad in Dune.

Tho I really hated Daryl Hannah as Pris. She just does nothing for me on any level.

The recuts on Brazil include the dream sequences and a few more scenes which add some color to the film. The recut on Dune tho is much more significant because you understand much clearer the role of the Bene Gesserit sisterhood and the manipulations of bloodlines to produce the Kwisatz Haderach. Tho Dune is one of those things that you can either get into or not. The books are impossibly difficult to get thru - much like Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings - which also did NOTHING for me.

But now that I’m thinking about it - I also liked The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy — the film was a pretty fair imagining of Douglas Adams’ book - which I loved. My husband and I used to play the old Infocom game on our computer back in our first apartment! ;)

I think objectively SciFi Channel has done a good job with the titles they’ve reimagined. BSG is done well and I know the whole SG-1 property has been good for them as well. That’s another show I just never could follow. I loved the original film Stargate but the television series was a little hard for me to keep up with.

Speaking of spin off television series: I bought the 70’s spinoff of Logan’s Run from iTunes not too long ago which stared Gregory Harrison as Logan! It was kind of weird to watch it now… but still entertaining!

Thanks!

It looks like they went to the future and stole that furniture from a McDonalds

ryan,

Or raided an Ikea!

So glad to come back to the virtual world and see this post! I’m so glad that there are so many of us hot geeky girls who understand… ;)

Oh, and I absolutely jump in with the love for Blade Runner mentioned in other comments. One of my all time favorites.

13directions,

Nice to see you back among the geek girls!

Yes, Blade Runner is a fabulous film!
