Open What?
Sent to me by a fellow geeky reader; a shady start up company calling itself Psystar Corporation here has been making news on all of the major technology sites and blogs for selling what Psystar calls the Open Computer – a white box x86 based computer using technology borrowed from the OSx86 Project here to run Apple’s OSX on hardware not built by Apple. Calling themselves “The Smart Alternative to Apple” - Psystar is tempting the EULA overlords of Cupertino by building and selling computers loaded with Apple’s latest operating system – and it’s really only a matter of time before Steve Jobs drops an anvil on these yo-yos Wile E. style – but the real question is: why bother doing it at all?
I’m a big supporter of the open source community – having loaded several of my own computers with Ubuntu Linux and having migrated to software suites such as Open Office for my personal work and also using open source software like Wordpress to power geishaland. But we also own a couple of Macs too – which I love – tho on many personal levels I can and do support the work of the OSx86 Project to free OSX from the stranglehold of Apple Computer – but this support is more for the private enthusiast who might want to build their own machine and use OSX as their operating system – not for the yahoo trying to sell Mac knock-offs to people too cheap to actually buy a Macbook or even a Mac Mini if you really want to split hairs here.
I suppose much of this was inevitable and probably expected by Apple when they made the decision to switch to Intel based chipsets. Parts and technical specifications on all of the hardware is cheap and readily available – but I do have a problem with what Psystar represents, especially since I work for a technology company which has made significant investments in developing proprietary software products. I have no problem with Apple’s closed ecosystem. They make great products and more or less charge a reasonable price for what they offer. So – there is a choice in the marketplace.
Tho I’ve really been bitten by the open source bug since we converted one of our old desktops to Ubuntu a couple of months ago – and now I want to build more of them!
This new 10k RPM HDD by Western Digital called VelociRaptor here is just sexy! I can totally see myself building a computer around something like this. And maybe even running OSX on it might be cool too – and there are tons of online tutorials to teach you how to build your own machine like this one here.
I know – Hard Drives sexy? Yeah… I’m not a geek right?
It’s Tuesday too – Pennsylvania Election Day as well… ugh. I suppose that means I’ll have to watch MSNBC later on and get all pissed off and aggravated.
I used to do YouTube Tuesdays here but since I don’t use YouTube videos anymore since they changed the dimensions of their embedded objects and they screw up my slender columns, I host my own video clips now.
And I’m in the mood for something happy!

JAYSUS GIRL!
Do you know how turned on geek columns make me? I still reeling from the last one you wrote with Ubuntu and all that.
(Homina homina homina…shake it off shake off!)
