over morning tea: the quiet details of life

Waking up this morning with a cup of *Republic Darjeeling Black Tea; stepping back for a moment to pause and reflect on the last few months in geishaland, since I really haven’t done so in a while – as well as throwing in a few random scattered thoughts here and there on this lovely Thursday morning.

Can you believe that it’s almost June?  Where has the time flied off to?

Things really began to change for me here in geishaland sometime around the end of March.  It was then when I decided to Think Smaller, and it was also when I cast off all the psychological baggage which I’d been hauling around and just decided to go forward and trust my instincts again – and I’d have to say that my little experiment has been a success.  I’ve been able to write something, at least one thing that I’ve been happy with every single day since then – and on some days I’ve been so moved to write two or three things.  In fact, I think on one day I wrote four things!  I’m actually a bit overwhelmed by all this because it means that this has been the most productive period I’ve ever had in terms of personal creativity.

I have a lot of people to thank for that… all of you.

(big hugs and lots of kisses!)

I’d like to take a moment and thank everyone for reading and commenting and participating in some of the most fabulous conversations and sharing of ideas that this place has ever seen.  I’m deeply humbled and grateful that so many have taken the time to share something of themselves with me and with everyone else who reads here.  It’s sincerely appreciated and I hope that I can continue to inspire others to share and be so generous with their time and with their ideas in the future.

My Sanctuary has also blossomed – and considering that that part of my writing had been essentially closed off internally for over a year that’s an amazing thing.  I continue to be inspired to share my most intimate thoughts and experiences in new ways – even some of the more darker things in terms of either fantasy or real life experience have found their way out of me.  Since I moved everything over to a private area of geishaland, and after the initial push, I still get on average 2-4 requests per day for access, so that too continues to flourish and I’m grateful as well for the continuing interest in that aspect of my writing.

Creating something which has basically become a blog within a blog here with my Sanctuary has worked out so well for me — I find that the words simply flow from me with such ease now that I often find it difficult to know when to stop.  And I have soooo many things that I want to write about too!

Tonight is yoga night!

My husband Jeff had been working nights for the last seven weeks and I’ve been forced to beg off going to yoga night – which meant that I had to do a lot of daily yoga at home just to stay centered, but I also missed my social night as well, so I’m really looking forward to going tonight.  I’ve missed the girls.  I’ve also really missed seeing Lisa too.  Lisa and I talk on the phone almost every single day, but seeing her is different.  She and I have a lot to talk about too – and even tho we  do talk on the phone daily, some conversations need to happen face to face.  So I’m hoping to be able to spend some time with her.  Yoga night will likely become margarita night too – so don’t expect anything early out of me tomorrow!

What else?  Work has been busy as usual, but with summer right around the corner, people will be going on vacation so things will quiet down a bit.  They always do in the summer and even tho I do have people to answer to and responsibilities to meet, my son is home in the summer so I try and rearrange things so I can spend more time with him.  Tho he’s getting older and probably isn’t going to want to hang out with mom.  It’ll be more like — “ma can you give me a ride?” kind of interactions.  Oh well.  It was to be expected, right?

I’m also feeling terrible about what’s happened to Ted Kennedy too.  He’s been a fixture in my family’s life for so many reasons – reasons I’m not really in a position to share publicly, but my thoughts are with him and the entire Kennedy family.

And Ahoy! you New York based working girls! Stock up on your lube and condoms!  Fleet Week is here! The US Navy has sailed into New York City harbor and that means that loads and loads of horny Sailors and Marines will be out looking for a little love and tenderness while on liberty!  Please be kind to them girls – they don’t make a lot of money and it gets lonely on a ship out at sea.  They may just want to get laid, but they also need a girl just to be nice to them… a little tenderness goes a long way, and aside from just the sex part of this, that’s really the service you’re providing them, just that little bit of kindness and intimacy.   My Father spent his life serving this country in the US Navy… so, believe me, they do get lonely!  And I’m pretty sure that’s how he met my mother…   ;)

And I’m also pretty sure that the Cougars will be out in full force this week in NYC too!  Competition ladies!  And I’ll confess… a man in uniform?  (… pants… damp and moist… OH! YES! YES! YES!  — Gets me right out of my panties everytime…) HA!

Speaking of Cougars — my Cougar piece here yesterday got so many hits that I nearly doubled my average daily traffic!  Wow!  And sweet Piper had her own take on this topic here which is well worth reading (as well as the incredibly kind things she had to say about me too!  Thank you sweetie!)

And can anyone come up with a good way to make Hillary Clinton go away?  WTF is it going to take for her to get it and get out of the way?  You lost Hillary!  Don’t you get this??  And buy a calculator you ditzy bitch!  You know that the popular vote doesn’t mean shit!  And the only way you get the popular vote lead is if you count MI and FL and throw out all the caucus states!  You make me SICK!  ugh!

And Karl Rove needs to STFU

And while it won’t matter much to anyone other than us geeks — ODF has won the Office Document format war!  Article here. This is such an important thing for Interoperability and document sharing across office suites.  With so many people moving away from MS Office and other MS products and going with things like Open Office or operating systems like Ubuntu (which has become an incredibly mature operating system and is positioned to be a real alternative to Microsoft Windows) — this is big news.  I’ve actually found a pretty cool blog dedicated to Ubuntu and Ubuntu users here.

And much love to LELO for republishing both my ELISE and GIGI reviews!  Thanks guys!  I should have my LUNA BALLS review done soon!

And finally… My Boston Red Sox are in first place in the AL EAST and the New York Stankies are in LAST place — 7 1/2 games back!  YAY!  Lick me Hank Steinbrenner!  LMAO! All is right with the world!  And this is cool too here — it’s a Manny Ramirez interactive 500 home run tracker put out by the Boston Globe!  Very cool!

Well then – some more tea for me, and maybe an english muffin with raspberry preserves… yes, that sounds yummy.

Enjoy your Thursday!

* I buy all my teas from The Republic of Tea. I don’t have a deal with them to mention this – but in case anyone wants to know – they have a fabulous selection of fantastic teas of all varieties.

Can you believe that it’s almost June?

I know, right? It seems like just yesterday, I was graduating….oh, wait, I was! Haha!

Seriously, though, just three more weeks until…..well, you know. ;-)

Caitiebelle,

Yes… I know. I have my Kleenex ready. ;)

xoxo,
nina

Good morning (well, it’s probably afternoon by now. Kinda confusing, it’s already evening over here!),

Wow, that’s quite a list of thoughts! :) I have my own thoughts about most of them, but there were two that really stood out and meant something to me:

Ubuntu: I love that you’re so enthusiastic about it! You’ve written about Linux/ubuntu in the past, so even if it’s a little late I want to say I’m really glad to hear you’re using it - just like so many other people out there!

I’ve been using Debian on servers for years - but about 18 months ago I finally decided to start using it on my desk- and laptop. And I never went back! Well, I still have a windows partition for when I have to use certain software, but other than that I’ve been windows free for the last one and a half years. It’s amazing, isn’t it? Gaming excluded, there’s pretty much nothing you can’t do in Linux!

Granted, I’ve encountered a few pretty irritating issues and problems, but they’re often the result of me asking so much of the OS. I’m not exactly a light user ;) And besides, the problems I do encounter are almost always solvable if you put some effort into it. That’s what I love about Linux - the more experienced users can have complete control, and the novice users can enjoy a stable, secure and easy to use OS. My brother even got my mother to use it!

Anyway, kinda got off track. Just wanted to let you know I love how vocal you are in support of Linux, and hope you’ll have many happy Ubuntu years to come :D

And the other thing in your list of thoughts that caught my eye is something a bit less optimistic I’m afraid. I hope you don’t mind - the last thing I want to do is ruin your day with stories like these - but right now I kind of feel like sharing this…

I also read about Ted Kennedy a few days ago. Although I obviously don’t know him, nor do I live in the country he serves, it did feel a bit close to home. That goes for any story I read about someone being diagnosed with cancer these days. Last year (2007) was pretty hard on my family. I lost an uncle to cancer, and two other family members had tumors (succesfully!) removed. And just when I thought it was over, my own father (whose only 60 years old) was also diagnosed. Unfortunatly, he can’t be cured…

During the past six months he went through several chemotherapies, and luckily they’ve worked as best as they possibly could have. Although it’s unclear for how long, the therapies have extended his life for at least a little longer. These days my parents (and obviously we as a family too) are doing all sorts of things together - trying to make the most of the time we have. In about two weeks my parents will go on a long and well deserved cruise, and just last March the four of us went to Barcelona to spend one more last vacation together.

I don’t really know why I wanted to share this; there wasn’t really a precedent. Most of the time I don’t even think of him not being around anymore. And all things considered, so far I’ve managed pretty well. But once in a while it all comes rushing back, and I’m kind of glad it does. It’s not healthy to keep it all bottled up; if I didn’t think about it once in a while I would be ignoring reality. And that’s why I think I’m sharing this: it’s been a while since I’ve talked to anyone about this.

And I don’t know if it holds true for everyone, but I think it’s good to think about the fragility of life once in a while. Because only then you sometimes realize how important certain things or people are, and make you appreciate the time you have so much more.

Well, I hope I haven’t brought you (or anyone else whose reading this) down too much! Because that really isn’t my intention. Besides, even if it did, the first part of my reply is rather optimistic, so maybe that can compensate for all the negativity below… ;)

Enjoy the rest of your day and have fun at yoga night!

Michiel

The pleasure was all ours! :)

…I have a lot of people to thank for that… all of you….”

Nothing says T-H-A-N-K-S like a cold case of Guinness Draught (especially with the holiday around the corner).

Well, I’m just sayin’…. ;)

Namaste LG, Namaste

Michiel,

Yes — I figured I’d get all of this out of the way (my random thoughts) because I figured that I’d be pretty useless today! ;)

As it turns out I was right!

I’ve been really pleased with Ubuntu. So far I’ve converted three computers to running Ubuntu and I find that I’m doing most of my work on my Ubuntu workstation — with the exception of my job which really does require me to use my XP machine.

I’m not a big fan of dual boot systems — but you can use WINE or something similar to run Windows apps on Linux — which works out very well. I run Photoshop that way.

There are a few quirks with Ubuntu but nothing so annoying as Windows.

Oh wow, I’m so sorry to hear that your family has been hit with so much loss and difficulty. Thank you for sharing something which I imagine must be incredibly painful and difficult to talk about.

Life is incredibly fragile, but it’s also incredibly resilient. We must remember to seize life when we can and to cherish every moment alive.

Life, Love, all of it.

Thanks so much,

nina

Hi Ana!

Oh thanks! ;)

You all make what I do so much easier! I simply LOVE everything by LELO that I’ve had the opportunity to use and write about!

Thanks much!

nina

Lazy Ichi,

lmao! Please… no alcohol jokes this morning… it is still morning, isn’t it?

ugh… what a night. When the room stops spinning I think I’ll write about it.

namaste,
nina

[...] wrote here the other day that the Kennedy family has been an important part of my own family’s life – [...]

Thank you for those words! And you’re absolutely right: it’s so important to just seize life and cherish every moment. I have a little file on my desktop called todo.txt, in which I usually write down things that I need to do or work on. I check it almost daily, and during all of this I wrote down “live!” at the top of the file. So each time I read through the list I’m reminded to actually live my life and not ‘waste’ any of the precious time I have.

Oh, and it’s good to hear you run photoshop through wine! Photoshop is actually one of the programs I still run in windows: simply because I’ve never tried to run it with wine. But hearing you’re using it I’m certainly going to try it, too :)
